Deb announced receipt of a lovely Thank You letter from the New Young Patriot Group that provided the entertainment for our Christmas program.
The program last week was a timely presentation by Rotarian Ken Kaplan and his wife Ronda. Ken is the National Chairman of The Shelter Box U.S.A.”Organization. The project originated by Rotary in the United Kingdom where they are headquartered. Ken had a Shelter Box assembled in our meeting room for our inspection. The unit is capable of supporting ten people for six months. The boxes weigh between 110 and 125 lbs. They are limited to a maximum 130lbs. anything over is subject to extra charge by the Air Lines.
They can be customized to fit the type of disaster and conditions.
The units in addition to the tent, contain water purification filters and tablets cooking stove, tool kit, thermal blankets, ground cover, mosquito netting, sleeping mats, pots, bowls, mugs, silver ware, rain ponchos, and a Children’s School Supply Kit. The cost is aprox.$500.00.
Pres. Deb presented a check to Ken for one Box. Our original intent was to buy another using a Rotary Matching Fund Grant but Ken advised the program was not eligible for matching funds.
Ken encouraged us to promote the program outside of Rotary. He spoke of fund raising in Schools, Churches, and Synagogues. Shelter Box now has 3300 units either on the ground or on the way to Haiti. The goal is 10,000. The first 12 Boxes were used to house a make shift Field Hospital at the Airport where they had been operating in the open. Since 2001 they have distributed 60,000 boxes to serve over one million people. They are a 501c, donations are tax deductable. Ken is working to have a staging depot in this Country especially in the Florida. Ken and Ronda were accompanied by R.Britt Deviney from the Palm Beach Rotary Club. Britt is the District Representative for Shelter Box for our area. Britt can be contacted at 561-329-2632
Cal Cearley’s Palm Beach Community Bank came to the rescue after seeing the slide presentation and donated $1000.00 to purchase two more boxes. Thank You Cal and the Bank.

Welcome Back
Jakko Koskinen our winter member from Finland.
Ray Kish from Danbury Conn.
Bill Crotty, Bronson Mich.
Our other long time member from Finland, Matti Korpinen, ended our program by telling us of his career. Matti was educated as an Engineer. He has crossed the Atlantic 126 times in the course of his work. He has visited all but two of the States: the exceptions are South Carolina and Oregon. Matti started an Industrial Robot plant in Illinois, moved back to Finland in 1987 then returned in 1989 to run a plant in St.Paul, Minn. for 11 years. Matti was asked the differences between Rotary clubs here and in Finland. He said his home Club was run in a more formal way and our Club was more fun. We are glad you and Jakko enjoy your visit with us.
From Charlie…”As an asider and to illustrate how small the World can be at times When the writer moved to Florida and attended the Club for the first time he knew Matti looked familiar. In talking to him I found we both were calling on R.C.A.in Lancaster Pa. at the same time.”
